1 out of every 8 people in west central Indiana is food insecure. This means that they lack consistent access to enough food to live an active and healthy lifestyle. For children in our community, that number is even higher, reaching over 8,200.
As a member of Feeding America, the largest domestic emergency food bank network, our Foodbank collects, warehouses and distributes enough food for more than 3.25 million meals annually to more than 90 soup kitchens, food pantries, senior centers, youth centers and other charitable agencies in 7 counties.
Approximately 8% of our funding comes from Federal Government sources and 90% from non-governmental sources.
I was at the food distribution at Ben Franklin Elementary today. The food I received will help my whole family. My kids are home for the summer and there it is hard to find the extra money for lunches that they'd been getting at school - I use that money for gas to work. Our food bill has tripled recently and my paycheck hasn't. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Do you know how a Foodbank works?
We operate as a warehouse facility that distributes food to more than 90 partner agencies. As a member of Feeding America, we are also active in collecting and using local hunger statistics to end food insecurity in our communities.
Food Insecurity: Lacking sufficient food to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
Each year, Feeding America releases their study: Map the Meal Gap. This is the only study that provides local-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs across the United States. For our seven-county service area, Map the Meal Gap finds that 1 in 8 people are food insecure, including 15.3% of all children. For the first time, data for our area also includes rates for Black and Latino populations as well. Locally, 23% of Black individuals are food insecure along with 20% of all Latino individuals.
